Five Card Flickr

Five Card Flickr is an interesting site to use for writing.  Children...with the help of parents...may choose 5 photos to use to write a story.  The photos inspire the creative writing process.  There is a spot to type in the story and then it looks like  the story may be added to the gallery for public review. Instead, children may just write the story on paper after they decide which pictures to use for their inspiration!

StoryLine OnLine

This site is an on-line video streaming site where actors read popular children's books.  If you explore the site, you'll find some off-line activites to complete with your children.  This site targets students in grades K-2 but I have found everyone loves to listen to a good book!

Interactive Poetry Site

Choose your poetry form from the list of links on the left of the site.
Then just add words to make a poem your own.   It's great fun!
Here's my poem...

I am a wallaby
Brown as a field of dry weeds
I eat the green sprouts as soon as they emerge
I carry my joey until he is too big for my pouch
I can jump over rocks and bushes
I can hop away quietly and quickly
I am a wallaby

You can select from one of our spelling lists, or create your own. Custom spelling lists can be saved.

Once you have selected a list, play one of the many free spelling games listed to the right.

These spelling games have been designed to improve spelling abilities in a fun way, that your children will love.

Off Line Practice

There are lots of things  you can do with your children to practice the spelling words.  Here are a few ideas...

Have your students make flashcards to practice the words.

Use this flashcards to put the words in ABC order.

Give the students a synonym and have them find the word that means the same or nearly the same.

Make another set of spelling flascards and play concentration with them!

Word Safari

You can type in up to 7 of your child's spelling words so they can practice them using this neat game.  It took me awhile to figure it out and I finally had to actually read the directions! Students move the character with the directional keys to touch the letters that spell the word. If they touch an animal, a balloon pops. When all the balloons pop, the game is over. I didn't last very long with this game but I think kids would have no problems with moving the character! They would have a great time playing this at home.

Spelling City

Most of our students know about this site and they all seem to love it!  Students type in the words and they can practice with a test or use games.  This is one of the best sites around and there are plenty of activities to keep the kids busy practicing all week.  If students type in the words, make sure they spell them correctly the first time around!  Notice that you can add additional words by clickingon the numbers at the bottom of the list.

YouTube Videos with Writing Prompt

TeacherHub is a great site with lots of resources for teachers.  One of my favorite sections is the YouTube writing prompts with specific grade level ideas for writing.  Well, YouTube is blocked in all WV schools so we can't use these lessons.  But you can!  The link should take you to the page with the video and prompt.  Under the lesson there will be forward and previous buttons to find other videos with the grade level ideas just in case you don't like the particular topic.  Students could write on paper or practice writing using your word processing program.  Enjoy this great resource!

WordAhead- Practice your vocabulary with this great program!
